Shape of Things to Come in the Video Game Industry

Last year, the video gaming industry’s hardware and software revenues thoroughly stomped the Film Industry’s box office grosses. Game Spot, a successful game-related reseller, announced $1.7 billion in total sales for last year’s Christmas Season.
In fact, December proved to be a milestone in gaming’s conquest of Yank culture, with top leagues awarding nearly $2 mil in exclusive contracts with the top 7 professional gamers on 18 December. Major League Gaming currently runs a weekly TV program on USA Network, and the income potential of online gaming is starting to show its potential.
A few days later ,on December 21st, Johnny(Commissioner) Damon, center fielder of the New York Yankees, made public his association with the Global Gaming League, to establish the PBGL. The PBGL will permit Joe Fan to play with many of his favorite pro baseball stars in the PBGL’s designated AO of video game competition, Project Gotham Racing 3.
Also there’s the continual merging of Hollywood and the Game Industry toward a common destination. Top game creator, Capcom, has already experienced a satisfying affiliation with the Film Industry when it sold its Resident Evil property to Impact Pictures and Sony Pictures for 3 separate productions (a 3rd is in production). Now they are entering into a cooperative agreement with Hyde Park Entertainment to film a Street Fighter picture.
Online gaming is demonstrating itself to be quite capable of standing on its own, however. Up to June of last year, Xbox Live disclosed that more than half a billion complete matches of Halo 1 and 2 had been played on Xbox Live. This is not to be confused with half a billion combatants, but 500 million full contests, that may accommodate as many as sixteen players simultaneously. This would appear to be more like a revolution, than a passing fancy.
We do not claim to be the smartest guy on the block, but even our dog can see the potential. How soon before more athletic leagues see the potential in following Johnny Damon’s lead? maybe if game developers began manufacturing games specifically for this type of gameplay? EA Sports, are you listening? Picture the enthusiasm of crazed fans when they could play John Madden’s NFL 2007 alongside celebrity football jocks online, during the off-season? Off-season would no longer be a dead ball for the sporting leagues. Talent promotion and enthusiasm would continue year around. how about pro wrestling? NHL? What would a Indy 500 fan pay to race with a favorite racer online? The combinations are infinite.
Video gaming, andparticularly, on-line videogaming, is going to alter Entertainment as we know it.
